Just Waves on the Ocean

I am just a wave on the ocean,
And you’re just the wave next to me.
We rose from the self-same waters,
Sinking back to the self-same sea.

Look close at the waves all around us,
Are they waves, or the ocean are they?
For is there a wave free of ocean?
What else could waves but contain?

Then journey with me, cross the ocean,
What matter as ocean or wave?
Till we reach the shore o’er yonder,
We were told is the end of the Way.

And each wave will melt into nothing,
Its waters just water will be.
Together returning to oneness,
Draw back to the self-same sea.

Then tell me, you waves that still wander,
Be you ocean or water or wave?
Be you this, be you that or the other?
Or just foam at the end of the Way.
